Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy diagram

A hysterectomy is an operation to remove the womb (uterus). Depending on the condition being treated, the cervix, fallopian tubes or ovaries may be removed at the same time.

It is used to treat conditions such as large or troublesome fibroids, heavy bleeding that has not settled with other treatment, adenomyosis, uterine prolapse and some cancers of the reproductive organs. After a hysterectomy, periods stop and pregnancy is no longer possible.

The operation can be done through a cut in the lower abdomen (abdominal hysterectomy), through the vagina (vaginal hysterectomy) or by keyhole surgery (laparoscopic hysterectomy). The approach depends on the size of the womb, the reason for surgery and your medical history, and is discussed with you beforehand.
